Primary
Our philosophy is based on providing high quality, innovative and explicit teaching programs that are targeted to address student learning needs within small classes. Teachers identify, plan and design learning opportunities which meet the outcomes identified in the Australian Curriculum.
Because we are a small school we are able to develop and share effective understandings about all our students and how they learn best. Our regular assemblies provide opportunities to celebrate student achievements and to recognise students who have demonstrated our core school values (Respect, Courage, Aspiration and Growth).
Primary teachers provide learning opportunities based on The Australian Curriculum and this includes English, Mathematics, Science, Information Technology and HASS (Humanities and Social Sciences). Specialist teachers provide weekly lessons in Music, Health, Art and Physical Education. Physical Education includes Learn to Swim programs for Kinder to Grade 6 students as well as Cross Country, Swimming and Athletics Carnivals. Students who perform well at these carnivals are able to represent the school at district level.
Strong emphasis is given to the development of literacy and numeracy skills, which are vital to success in all subject areas. Careful monitoring and assessment throughout the Primary years ensures that children who are not making good progress can be identified and supported. In all classes an additional teacher is provided during to support literacy learning.
Visiting performances and excursions throughout the year provide experiences to enhance the learning program in a range of curriculum areas and classes have ready access to the Marine Discovery Centre, often visiting it at least once a term.
We believe that developing positive relationships with families is crucial for maximising student learning and teachers make regular contact with families. All parents and carers are encouraged to contact their child’s class teacher if they are concerned about anything – we are always happy to help. Staff are also very appreciative of any time parents and carers can give to supporting classroom and school activities.
